Determining Your Success

I am convinced that we all have the gift and ability for great success in us. I am also convinced that this can happen very easily. It all depends on how you view it.

I used to look at the bottom line figure of how much money my business was making to evaluate that year’s success. I would eagerly try every year to match that profit or make it higher.  But in reality life doesn’t work that way. A more realistic approach is to accept that life works in circles. We are going to have great years and not so great years.

At the moment, we are still experiencing a financial recession that has us all of us in a bit of a tale spin. Looking back on my business history, I have survived more than one of these recessions (thank God), and I can safely say that I learned more about business and myself during those difficult times than at any other time.

This is what I learned and am still learning:

  • Have faith. Have blind faith in a higher power, never for a moment questioning that things are going to work out.
  • Appreciate. We are so incredibly involved in investing time and energy in getting what we do not have that we forget to be thankful for how far we have gotten, and what we already have.
  • Your art or service. This is the time to review your talent. Invest more time in coming up with great new ideas. By doing this, you’ll start feeling empowered and excited.
  • Censor it. If you listen to the news and all of your negative friends or family about how bad things are, you might never get out of bed in the morning. Connect with folks that have a more positive approach to life and faith.
  • Last but not least:  be very kind and gentle with yourself.  At times, we can be our own worse enemy. I have just one thing to say to you: If you love what you do, you are already successful.  That is your asset.

Of course, I love a very profitable year, but I have learned to redefine success.  For me, real success, is the ability to endure and grow even in challenging times.

Please tell me, how do you define success? Or, what have you learned from failing?

Wow, I really needed this today. I’ve been trying really hard to start my own business, but it’s easy to feel discouraged when all anyone can do is tell you “no.” But you’re right. I love what I do and I’m just gonna keep moving forward! Thank you so much Preston.

Preston your optimism is truly inspiring. I’m a small business owner and I’ve felt the sting of this recession as well. Yes, things got tight but I constantly reminded myself to stick with what I knew best… my creativity.

Economic downturns are never welcomed, but in that time it forced me to be MORE creative in using the limited resources I had access to. Thankfully things have since bounced back but I still use some of the lessons I learned on a limited budget and it’s continuing to help both my business and my faith in my work.

It wasn’t a huge financial year for me, but I definitely measure it as a success

How wonderful to read this post! I recently started to read a great book ”The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne. I think everyone should buy this book and make it your second bible. This is so true what you said Preston: ”Have blind faith in a higher power, never for a moment questioning that things are going to work out.” It’s exactly what the book is teaching: ”Ask, Beleive and Receive because your current toughts are creating your future life – What you think about the most or focus on the most will appear as your life – Your thoughts become things.” and I must say it’s really excited to apply ”The Secret” in my life. This is what success is for me, transforming my whishes into my reality and enjoy every second of it! Thanks for sharing.

You sound like a PREACHER ,, this is what the BIBLE teaches,,,me being a christian,,knowing that HE WHO STARTED A GOOD WORK IN ME ,,FOR ME WILL SEE ME AND IT THROUGH this trying times,, and have a few faithfull clientelle ,, God brings new ones,,,and you are quite right SUCESS is not measured by money,, its who we are,and what is in us ,,, and will go beyond.

I’ve definitely been my own worse enemy lately, I really needed to read your words today Preston! Times are really tough right now and it seems like its only getting harder. Thanks for reminding me that I’ve already done so much to get where I am now and if I can get this far, I can keep going.

    Hi Preston,
Thanks for this inspiring message. I believe all of us get a little discouraged at times…..Ive been this way several times but I know that I have to move forward. Ever since I opened my Invitation design studio here in Atlanta, I have been waiting and waiting for that “one” big project that is going to push my company into what I call Success. Instead of focusing and trusting on God to guide me, I have been trying to force things. Im finding myself questioning whether I should have left my full time job to do this….but once I get my next wedding invitation project Im in heaven again. It is people like you and Sean Low that inspire me to push forward.

    Thank you!
