I think we’re on the same page. I’ve been focusing on raw vegetables and fruits as well. Maybe it’s becuase I’ve been feeling rather lethargic lately, not to mentioned bloated.
I also have some of the same challenges in terms of how to balance that diet and build more momentum for cycling, an excercise that I really enjoy but one that calls for more carbs.
So, I think my strategy is to increase the raw vegetables but still keep a little meat and whole-wheat grain on the plate just for strength and mental stability.
Aaah, favorite raw vegatables: carrots (great for skin and eyes), beets (I’ve always loved them as a kid) and kale.

I’ve been trying to ease into more raw foods as well, especially as the NY summer heat just begs for lighter fare. But yes, I don’t want to..ahem..float away from that diet. Try one of my new absolute favorite shakes:
Avocado Shake-
1/2 ripe avocado
cup of almond milk (or more if you like it less thick)
1 tablespoon of agave nectar (more or less depending on your sweet tooth)
blend and enjoy
there are many variations online as well, and sometimes I add brewed organic green tea, no sugar for a frothier shake. Enjoy!

Hi Preston,
I too have tried the raw food diet and was very successful. During the summer months, I often limit my meals to light dishes composed of only fruit and vegetables. My mind and body appreciates the break. However, I must admit that It is hard to pass up the chocolate cake at weddings. Thank you for inspiring me to maintain my healthy eating!

I try not to be a fanatic about food which sometimes takes the social out of socializing. I’m open to everything with moderation. All my life I’ve had fruit and vegetables on my plate, especially green leefy ones – that’s the foundation. At least once a week I do a vegetarian day. 1/4 cup servings for the most part to manage the calories. Portion sizes are key. Brown rice and whole grains. Right now I can’t get enough avocado and mango. I don’t own a microwave on purpose. I still pop popcorn on the stove (my main snack). Try crab seasonings on it. And don’t forget some kind of exercise. Nothing else matters without it.

That’s what so wonderful about the Summer… all of the yummy fresh fruits and vegetables! It would be hard for me to cut rice/breads out of my diet completely, but I compromise with low-carb/calorie/whole grain bread and brown rice options when I can and I definitely feel much “lighter”. I agree with Eclectique916 that portion control is the key – and exercise, too! I’ve been making fresh fruit smoothies… keeping it low-calorie too. Here’s my delicious blend:
1/4 cup Blueberries
4 Large Strawberries
1/3 of a Banana
1/8 cup Blackberries
2 TBS of POM Juice (Blueberry/Pomegranate mix)
3 TBS of Lowfat, Carb Balance Vanilla Yogurt
3 TBS of Sherbet
I throw in 2 TBS of a non-dairy Calcium/Vitamin D3 liquid supplement called Wellnesse to ensure I get my calcium for the day.
It’s yummy!

I am thrilled to hear about this. I started that diet almost two months now, but, I did it this way.
No starches at all, no sugars, no cream, no coffee, lots of water, broccoli, carrots, lots of lettuce (all other vegetables), apples, plums, peaches. I stayed away from bananas for a while. Felt lighter than ever, full of energy and proud of myself. I have now introduced milk, oranges and now protein, fish (fabulous). What is so similar is that I was a rice and peas, yam, Caribbean cooking type of lady. Yes loved my gourmet food, but, this diet was a 100% turn for me. Lost inches most definitely and importantly the self discipline goes to all parts of your life. Your happiness with how you feel is indescribably satisfying

I have a hard time getting my husband to eat fruits and vegetables. I moved to the US 3 years ago and if I had a penny for each time I heard someone proclain they hated fruits and vegetables, I would be typing this from my private residence in Santorini!
I grew up between France and Beirut and my diet was mainly raw by habit and tradition.
Have you tried Taboule or Fattouch? I make these when I entertain and people never realise how many vegetables they are ingesting. One of my favorite salads is an Endive and Beet salad.

Nuts and berries make fantastic snacks that are quick and easy. As for my favorite food to cook and serve? Well, it doesn’t really fit into this conversation, but I can’t lie about it—Bacon. I love it. Every morning, I fry two pieces and drizzle the grease over the dogs’ kibble. I do make a point of purchasing humanely raised uncured bacon that has no nitrates, nitrites or preservatives. I have never met a bacon dish I didn’t like. Recently, I heard there is a southern county fair tradition of deep-fried bacon. Chef Amy Jurist, in LA, is known for her Bacon Affair dinners. The last one sold out so quickly, I missed out. I guess there are a lot of us out there. . . .

I became a vegetarian 6 months ago, and have lost 30 lbs. I combined eating healthy and working out ten hours a week and have boosted by energy levels beyond what I thought would ever be possible for me. Take your new lifestyle one day at a time. Soon you’ll be so addicted to feeling great that your old food choices won’t even phase you
