Everyone knows summertime is big wedding season, but I’m also very busy with all of my fall and winter brides, who are in the middle of intently planning their own upcoming weddings. With the bad economy the last two years, many of my brides requested understated designs. They wanted elegance but nothing showy. They felt it would be in bad taste to do anything too grand; they didn’t want to look like they were showing off.
However, finally, this is starting to change. This year, most of my brides are ready to embrace their ultimate dream wedding, and they are not afraid to do something spectacular. I think Prince William and Kate Middleton can take some responsibility for this; I suspect the Royal Wedding made everyone feel like it was OK to celebrate again.

Readers, are your clients also asking for bigger designs again? My New York City brides all seem to want tall centerpieces right now, and I’m loving it. But what are they requesting in your area — tall or low arrangements? I love getting this kind of information from all of you, because sometimes it feels like New York City is its own little bubble, and I’m missing all the action going on elsewhere.

We have a spectacular 2012 wedding we are designing. The vision for their florals is so grand (tall, full, dramatic), we have found one St Louis florist who is really cut out for the job. We don’t typically consider many of our weddings very “simple” (maybe more understated at times) but this one is certainly more grand and spectacular and we can’t wait to see the final product.

Oh Preston! This is so beautiful!! I’m loving the softer hues for weddings.
Yes, we are doing many more tall statement pieces than we were three years ago. Brides are wanting their dream weddings, regardless of the economy. Lucky for us.

This has been an amazing year with gorgeous brides wanting gorgeous flowers. I try to remind all my clients that tall designs decorate the space throughout the evening, since guests tend to block most of the lower designs, and add intimacy to a grand space! Even if they may not all be tall, they should try adding a few for depth and the ever popular “Wow”!
I have to add though that I had my first all low centerpiece wedding this season last weekend and loved it too! That wowed too!

it’s funny that we are across the atlantic & our brides have followed the same trends, asking for understated pieces & now they are deciding to go back to overstated pieces, it’s definitly more fun for us as floral designers!
