DEAR PRESTON: IS KIM KARDASHIAN AN AMERICAN PRINCESS?

Dear Preston: Is Kim Kardashian An American Princess, Preston's blog

(Image via eonline)

Dear Preston,

I’m a florist in France, and I get so inspired by you and so many other wonderful American designers. But these last few weeks, I’ve been very surprised at the amount of press that Kim Kardashian’s wedding has gotten. It’s almost as if you consider this reality show person to be your country’s “royalty,” while almost no one in Europe knows who she is. Was this an American attempt to copy the real royal wedding?

Sincerely,
A French Florist

Dear French Florist,

That’s an interesting question. But no, I don’t think America considers Kim Kardashian its answer to Kate Middleton. It’s true there’s been a lot of coverage of the Kardashian wedding, but I haven’t read any comparisons to the royal wedding. Kim Kardashian is a successful celebrity and a very beautiful one at that; her wedding, much like Kate Moss’ recent wedding, was celebrated and enjoyed by people who love weddings, celebrities and fashion and style trends. Personally, I think both Kate Moss and Kim Kardashian are trendsetters, and as someone in the the wedding and event design business, I was very curious to see what wedding styles they were drawn to; if my clients are paying attention to what celebrity as well as royal weddings look like, then I better be paying attention too!

Dear Readers, what do you think of “A French Florist’s” question? What’s your opinion? Which American celebrity do you think is most like Kate Middleton? Who is American “royalty”? Please share your ideas in the comments!

Preston, like you I don’t think that anyone in America considers Kim American royalty or any celebrity for that matter. I am a planner and I actually am not bothered by the extra press because I LOVE weddings so the more the merrier. Granted celebrities have the funds and often times global pull that any royal may have or more. They have become our countries leading philantropist, political activist and trendsetters. I would assume pretty much what the royals are to their respective countries, they are not extra special. I mean honestly whats the big difference anyway, the POTUS could be considered royalty in comparison but the only difference would be his bloodline. In all the whole thing is about a farytale which we have been brought up to think you have to be a Princess to get. Everyone wants one and you don’t have to be a Royal or celebrity to get it.

She is not a royalty and never will be. She is only famous because she pays the press to talk about her. She leaked her own sex tape for publicity for heaven sake. Her mom uses her kid for money. How can anyone compare her to Kate Middleton?

I personally do not understand our culture’s desire to elevate people to “celebrity” status for absolutely no reason. At the time that the Kardashians were rising to fame, I was moving back to Canada from living abroad in London. I had no idea why she was famous – she’s not an actress, she’s not a singer.

However, that being said, the UK has a bigger “reality star” culture than we do! So to say that this is a purely American phenomenon and that it doesn’t exist in Europe is incorrect. There’s a new trend it seems: “Reality Royalty”, and all of the Kardashians would certainly be on THAT list.

I’d be embarassed if I were American. A society that maginifies KK and her family. How dare people make reference to her as royality and compare her to Kate Middleton? I want to believe the American people are far more intelligent than that, alas I think I have been proven wrong.

I have heard references on TV to the Kardashian wedding as being our Royal Wedding. The wedding was lavish and Kim looked beautiful, but aside from spending big bucks, she is no different from any other bride.

The Insider said that the Kardashians will make several million dollars from this wedding.

Royalty??? No way! Reality? Not even that!

William was born royal, from a long lineage of royals. This sets him apart from the average person or celebrity.

I think the couple who came closest to being a royal couple in our country were John and Jackie Kennedy, and because of their humanitarian efforts, maybe Brad and Angelina.

You plebeians … She should just as well be considered “royalty”. We watch her every move as if she were Henry VIII , comment about her fashion as if she were the Duchess of Devonshire . American’s lack of god given sovereignty is created in the pages of people magazine . You can’t argue with it, put down your extra value meal and maybe someone will photograph you to a stately position

    Dear Preston,

    Hello Preston!
Earlier today I read that Kim Kardashian told some of her guests that her wedding is America’s version of a royal wedding. To answer your question: I feel Paris Hilton could be America’s princess and someday soon she will marry. Her wedding day will be watched by millions around the world.
    Thank you for your question.
