ELABORATE AND COSTLY WEDDING AND EVENT DESIGNS ON MINIMAL BUDGETS

ELABORATE AND COSTLY WEDDING AND EVENT DESIGNS ON MINIMAL BUDGETS, Preston's blog, Preston Bailey Flowers, Preston Bailey's book, floral design, florist, wedding flowers
My new book, Preston Bailey Flowers, arrives in bookstores at the end of the month. This is my fifth book, and, as most of you know, all of my books celebrate the events and weddings I’ve been fortunate enough to design. I’m always incredibly honored when someone tells me that my books inspire them, because I too have an extensive library of books that inspire my work. I have several books that feature designs by the brilliant architect Santiago Calatrava as well as the extremely talented floral architect Daniel Ost, and I can never get enough of them!

However, there is one complaint I hear time and again; vendors tell me that their clients bring in copies of my books and request my high-end designs at very minimal costs. This puts vendors in a tough spot; remember, most of the designs in my books were done with very large budgets. That being said, I’m always amazed at the phenomenal creativity of so many vendors, who are able to create stunning interpretations of my work.

Dear Readers, has a client ever brought you a picture of an elaborate design and asked that you replicate it on a small budget? If so, what did you do? I’d love to know how you handle this situation!

Hello Mr Preston! A friend of mine, wanted me to decorate for her 50th party. She showed me a photo from a magazine, and asked that I do something like that. That project would of been very expensive! But I used my “talent of thought” and came up with something similar to what she wanted. And guess what? She loved it!

Working in the arts means constantly thinking of how we can take classic techniques and replicating them with software like photoshop. Preston have you ever used print to augment a wedding? How so?

Many times. Once a mom brought in a picture of an elaborate bouquet, which had the price listed beside it in the magazine. She said that because I am located in a small city that she thought I could do it a lot cheaper. I informed her that many times it costs more, because I have to FedEx every flower in to me. I do always tell them I can give them “the look”, if not the exact same thing, and fit it to their budget. However, sometimes it’s simply impossible to meet their expectations when they want the room draped, 400 guests, centerpieces, etc. for $1,000.

I can’t wait to buy your new book. I treasure the ones I have. You inspire us all.

I think this would be a great guide for people who like to buy floral arrangements. Congratulations on this book. I’m expecting other flower buying techniques with this.

This particular occasion was my own wedding, way before I bagan studing to become a proffesional wedding planner. My husband and I wanted a tropical alter like the ones you see in destination weddings. We could not afford the supplies to create one just like that. Our Budget was literaly like $1,500 for the entire wedding. So I went to the Dollar store and bought 8 long faux bamboo sticks, walmart for fabric, and I got silk flowers and butterflies from michals. The entire project cost me about $100, and looked great. It is possiable to create stunning designs on a budget. Thanks, and I truely admire your work Preston!!
