Give Wedding Industry Vendors the Credit They Deserve

October 31, 2011

Pamela's Exclusive Floral and Event Design Wedding

Last Thursday, one of my regular readers, Pam Archer, who owns Pamela’s Exclusive Floral & Event Design and always shares such thoughtful opinions, left this comment:

“I always give photo credits to the photographers who take pictures of my work. Why do they not feel the need to oblige? How does everyone else feel? People share pictures of my work all the time, but I am never credited for it.”

Pam’s question is a great one. If a photographer takes pictures of your work and uses those photos to promote his own talent and get new business, I see absolutely no reason why he shouldn’t also acknowledge you as the designer. After all, giving you credit as the designer doesn’t take anything away from the photographer’s work. I think photographers absolutely should feel obligated to return the favor. This used to happen to me a lot, too, especially in the early years of my career. Vendors such as lighting specialists, rental businesses, photographers, tent companies, etc… all often used images of my work without giving me credit.

And, frankly, it annoyed the hell out of me. However, the up side was that my work got a lot of exposure. People would see my work, inquire who the designer was and call me up!

You know, life has a great sense of humor. It’s been many years since then, and my business has come a long way. A few of those same vendors now call me and ask permission to use images of the work we did together.

The bottom line is that we’re in this industry together. All of us — lighting vendors, chair rental companies, photographers, designers, etc…  Giving credit where credit is due is the least we can do to honor each other.

Dear Readers, what do you think? Please share your own opinions in the comments. And thank you, Pam, for your wonderful question!

THIEVES: WHAT SHOULD YOU DO WHEN COMPETITORS STEAL YOUR WORK?

October 27, 2011

(Image via bnet)

Dear Readers, thank you so much for all of your many suggestions in response to my blog post on Monday. I really appreciated all of your ideas.

First and foremost, I’ve decided to stop hiring this florist. Many of you also suggested that I have my freelancers sign a confidentiality agreement. I think that’s a good idea. I had always hoped that an honor system would be sufficient, but, I guess that just isn’t enough.

At the risk of continuing to sound petty, today I want to talk about another type of stealing. The kind that happens online.

I sometimes receive emails from friends and clients telling me that they saw a photo of my work in a competitor’s online portfolio. Obviously, when this happens, my team and I immediately contact the other site and ask that the images be taken down. But it’s still very upsetting.

I’ve also seen sites that look surprisingly like my site. Some of my competitors have stolen my web ideas for their own sites. I’ve long believed that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but I also think this can only be taken so far. Sometimes I feel like my peers have forgotten that true art is original art.

What do you think, dear readers? Has anyone every misrepresented images of your work as their own creations? Has anyone ever copied your website? What did you do?

My Trip to the Edmonton Bridal Expo

October 26, 2011

Preston Edmonton Bridal Expo Katherine LomaxWhew! I just got back from a two-week trip around the world. Yes, folks, around the world in a mere two weeks! My trip included some wonderful book signings for my new book, Preston Bailey Flowers. I also had the opportunity to meet a few new clients in person, which I always love. One new client in particular has asked me do what I like to call “a dream job,” and I absolutely can’t wait to start designing it!

As fantastic as my travels were, what I really can’t stop thinking about is a short trip I took the week before my big international travels started:

I made a quick visit to one of the friendliest city I’ve ever been to; I went to Edmonton in Canada. The lovely Katherine Lomax, who owns the wedding planning and decor firm, Elegant Touches, invited me to give a speech as part of the Edmonton Bridal Expo. (The photo at the top of this post is of Katherine and me at the Expo!)

I’m so glad I was able to go. I had a great time. It was a pleasure working with Katherine, too. In fact, I was so taken with her that I invited her to come back to New York City with me and celebrate my new book at my book party at Joan Rivers’ home.

Here’s a photo of Katherine and me taken at my book party with Joan Rivers and friends:

Preston Bailey Joan Rivers Book PartyWhat struck me most about Edmonton is that this lovely city appears to be practically untouched by our current economic hardships. All of the planners and designers I met seem to be thriving. There was great vigor in the corporate and social market, and it was incredibly inspiring. I was thrilled to be surrounded by so much talent and energy. And Katherine was the ultimate hostess! She and her fantastic team ran the entire event brilliantly. The saying goes that behind every great man is a great woman, but, in Katherine’s case, the saying really ought to be that behind every great woman is a great man — Katherine’s husband, Bill Lomax, is amazing! I was so impressed by their relationship.

DEAR PRESTON: HELP ME GET OUT OF DEBT

October 25, 2011

Dear Preston,

I’m a floral designer, and I love what I do. I started my business seven years ago, and after about two years, my business really took off. But now, even though I’m still getting a lot of work, my business also has a lot of debt. I just can’t seem to get ahead. I read that you were once in a similar situation. What did you do? Please help me!

Sincerely,
Busy But Poor

Dear Busy But Poor,

You came to the right person! You are absolutely right. Ten years ago I was in the exact same place you are now. How did I end up there? Here’s how:

1. I was so excited to be doing what I love and working with people who appreciated my work that I practically gave my designs away for free.

2. I always said yes to the clients who wanted more than they were willing to pay.

3. I did not pay enough attention to my finances.

I ran my business this way for years. And I was always playing catch up. Even today, I get so excited about certain jobs that I still get that old feeling and a part of me wants to do the work for almost nothing.

Eventually, I ended up in so much debt that I realized I couldn’t fix the problem by myself. I hired a wonderful Chief Financial Officer, and she taught me everything I know today about finances. Here are the top three things she taught me. I hope they can help you, too:

1. You deserve to get paid well for what you do well. (Most artists forget this!)

2. You must learn to say no to clients who can’t afford you. (I still struggle big time with this one.)

3. Making a profit is an essential part of running a successful business. You must make a clean 50% profit on every job.

Please be gentle with yourself. The first step is acknowledging the problem, which you’ve done. Follow the three steps above for the next six months, and then check back in with me. I promise you’ll have good news to report!

Dear Readers, do you have difficulty with the financial side of your business? Do you truly believe that you’re worthy? Do you struggle, like I do, with saying no to clients who can’t afford you? Please share your thoughts and experiences in the comments.
