Event Solutions Idea Factory

I love this photo. That’s me with Randi Garrett, a talented floral designer who owns Naakiti Floral in Las Vegas. Randi tweeted this photo, and, as soon as I saw it, I knew I had to share it with all of you. It was taken at the Event Solutions’ Idea Factory conference in Las Vegas, and everything I feel about being there these last few days is here in this picture.

This year’s conference was an incredible experience. I got to meet lots of warm, genuine and inspiring artists, designers and hardworking industry folks. One of the reasons I speak at so many conferences and seminars is because I really value connecting with my peers in the industry. We have to stick together! We can learn so much from each other, and I always leave invigorated and thrilled to be a member of such an amazing group.

Thank you, Randi, and everyone else I got to chat with for being so inspiring — and so much fun, too!

Dear Readers, did you attend the Event Solutions’ conference? What was your favorite part?

Dear Preston: Should I Call My Disappointed Bride?

February 28, 2012

good customer service thank you cookies

(Photo via Sweet n’ Pretty)

Dear Preston,

I worry I’m acting like I’m still in high school and overreacting as I write this, but… My catering company was recently listed in a bride-submitted article for a statewide wedding magazine. One of my new wedding clients saw the article and followed up with the bride, inquiring about my services. To my surprise, the new wedding client told me that the bride said even though she was happy in the meetings and tastings, she was disappointed with the final product.

I was very upset and surprised as the bride never told me she was dissatisfied. Even though the issues were “small things,” as the bride put it — confusion on the bill, tense staff, not everyone got seconds — I am seriously bothered.

Should I call the bride (her wedding was in June 2011)? I ‘m not necessarily worried about losing business as this has never happened before. However, I do care about how my previous bride feels about her wedding day meal. And I wonder if calling her will help keep the collateral damage to a minimum. Or maybe she’ll think I’m trying to influence her? My business partner says I shouldn’t call, because we do wonderful work, and you can never make everyone happy.

What do you think I should do, Preston?

Thank you very much,
Upset Caterer

Dear Upset,

Thank you for your question. This is an important issue, because it relates to customer service — and if you follow my blog, you know how strongly I feel about good customer service. I’m going to be frank. You said you were upset and surprised, because this bride never told you she was disappointed. But why on earth were you waiting for her to reach out to you?

You should have followed up with this bride a week or two after her wedding back in June. You’re a caterer — you could have sent her and her new husband a delicious thank you gift. And you definitely should have called them, welcomed them home from their honeymoon, thanked them again for their business and asked if there was anything you and your team could have done better.

I guarantee that if you had called, you would have learned all the “small things” that disappointed the bride. And, at that point, you would have been in a good place to show the bride you care. You might have even been able to address some of her concerns.

From now on, you should reach out to every single one of your clients after their event. Don’t wait for them to call you.

You mentioned that one of the bride’s issues was with staff who seemed tense. It’s important to reach out to clients not only so you can provide them with good customer service and show you care but also so that you can improve your business. If there’s a problem with your waitstaff, you need to know that. Maybe you need to give them more training.

I agree with your business partner that reaching out to this bride now probably won’t make a difference. Instead, I would wait until her one-year wedding anniversary in June. Bake the couple something — maybe some cookies — and include a handwritten card wishing them a happy anniversary.

It’s likely the bride will call and thank you for your thoughtfulness. At that time, you can broach the subject of her wedding and ask if there is anything you could have done better. But if you don’t hear from her, just let it go.

Dear Readers, what do you think of my advice to this caterer? What would you do in her shoes? Do you follow up with your clients after their events? If not, you should!

Oscar Bridal Fashion Inspiration

February 27, 2012

At the moment, I’m in Las Vegas having an unbelievable time at the Event Solutions’ Idea Factory conference, but last night my attention was turned toward another sunny city — Los Angeles and the Academy Awards. Anyone who knows me, knows I love fashion, and the Oscars are like the Superbowl of Hollywood fashion.

Did you see the show? I noticed lots of bridal white, and I couldn’t help but take some wedding inspired notes as I watched the stars walk the red carpet. Here are my favorite white dress trends from the night:

1. Fringe
Cameron Diaz wore an off-white Gucci Premiere gown, and I thought her sparkly silver fringe train was the best part — it made the whole look for me.

2. One-Shoulder
Side-swept hair and one-shoulder gowns were big last night. Milla Jovovich was a knockout in her white beaded dress by Elie Saab Couture.

3. Gwyneth’s Cape
I know folks might not agree, but I thought Gwyneth Paltrow’s white Tom Ford ensemble was stunning, and I LOVED her big bracelet and matching ring. My only beef? Her awful ponytail! She was at the Oscars not the gym!

4. Short Sleeves
As far as I’m concerned, Octavia Spencer was an Oscar winner AND a fashion winner last night. She looked incredible in her off-white jeweled Tadashi Shoji gown that gathered at the waist.

5. Mermaid Train
Say what you will about Rooney Mara’s look, but I like that she’s not afraid to take fashion risks. The bodice of her delicate white Givenchy Couture gown wasn’t my favorite, but I did like that it was a bold, dramatic choice. And I always love a beautiful train.

6. Long Sleeves
I thought Shailene Woodley’s long-sleeve white Valentino Couture gown was a little mature for her, but she looked like no one else on the red carpet. Long-sleeves are huge in bridal right now, too, and I thought the details and cut-out design were fun and unique.

Dear Readers, which Oscar gowns were your favorites? Which of these red-carpet looks do you think would translate best to the bridal aisle?

Friendly Friday: Do You Know the Importance of ABC?

February 24, 2012

Stunning and Brilliant Events Scott Smallin Beautiful Bride

Every Friday I feature a reader comment from earlier in the week. Today’s comment comes from Sara Barnhill, who owns Stunning and Brilliant Events. (That’s one of Sara’s beautiful brides above!)

Sara responded to Monday’s post about how to make money in the event industry. Here’s an excerpt of what she had to say:

“My husband works in sales and has helped me the most with closing. He says to be ABC: Always Be Closing! … Just the other day I was at lunch with a former client and was sitting next to a girl who had just gotten engaged and was talking about her big day and how she wasn’t sure where to start.

“[I said] ‘I didn’t mean to overhear your conversation, but congrats on your engagement. I’m an event planner in the area. Give me a call. Let’s talk about your wedding!’ … And now I am planning her spring 2013 wedding! That really is how to make money in the business; it’s always when you least expect it! Just like my husband says, ‘Always Be Closing.’”

I love the idea of “Always Be Closing,” and I love this story. Way to go, Sara! It’s true; you should ALWAYS be on the lookout for new clients. You never know when a possible job might cross your path, but when it does, you better grab it! If you don’t — someone else surely will.

Dear Readers, do you practice ABC? Have you ever stumbled across a job like Sara did? Did you grab it? Please share your story in the comments!

Happy Friday, folks. Have a great weekend.

Event Solutions CEO Pauline Hoogmoed

February 23, 2012

pauline hoogmoed ceo event solutionsI’ve had the privilege of meeting many talented and successful women in the event industry, but at the very top of that list is always powerhouse Pauline Hoogmoed, the CEO of Event Solutions & Catersource. (That’s Pauline above!) She’s a true visionary, and her international story is so inspiring:

Pauline was born in Korea but grew up in both Hong Kong and New York City. She spent many years working in the food and catering business in San Francisco, Amsterdam, and Tokyo. (I told you – she’s a real globetrotter!) I also love that she attended the Event Solutions/CaterSource conferences for years before becoming the CEO in 2009.

It doesn’t surprise me that in the years she was a conference attendee, she kept a list of the things she would do to make the experience even better; she believed strongly that Event Solutions/CaterSource had the potential to be THE networking and education destination for our industry’s professionals. In other words, she had the insight of a natural CEO long before she became one.

Today, her vision and success are obvious: six years ago, Event Solutions/CaterSource had only 800 attendees. Next week, the Event Solutions’ Idea Factory conference and tradeshow in Las Vegas will welcome more than 11,000 folks!

Are you coming? I’ll be there!

I’m giving a talk on Monday and will be doing a floral demonstration on Tuesday. It’s an honor to be attending again this year, and I know that the conference — in Pauline’s capable hands — is going to be fantastic. Thanks for including me, Pauline. You’re my idol! Keep up your amazing work.

Dear Readers, who’s your idol in the event industry? Please write them a little note of hello and appreciation in the comments on this post!

P.S. If you are coming, I hope you’ll consider signing up for The Wedding Planning Institute’s Preston Bailey One-Day Signature Wedding and Event Design Certification Seminar and Internship, which is scheduled for February 25th and 26th (second day optional) at Caesar’s Palace.

I won’t be there, unfortunately, but this seminar is a wonderful way to learn all of my wedding and event design lessons in a single day! Click here for more information and to sign up.
