Dreams Come True at the Atrium Pacific Place in Jakarta

May 31, 2012

Preston Bailey Butterfly Installation Atrium Pacific Place Jakarta

There is something extra magical about creating public art installations, because everyone can enjoy them for free for several weeks or even months.

The wonderful Pacific Place Jakarta asked me to design just such an installation for all of their shoppers to enjoy. And even though I’m best known for my floral displays, I decided to create something for the Atrium without using a single flower. Instead, I used another of Mother Nature’s great beautiful wonders — Butterflies.

Butterflies, like flowers, comes in many beautiful varieties and colors; they’re an abundance of riches, and I couldn’t wait to see the finished design in Jakarta. However, it took a whole army of assistants working around the clock for well over a month to construct this five-stories-high structure made of hundreds of thousands of butterflies.

My team and I could not have done it without the local direction of Dina Touwani, who owns Flora Lines, and Budi Heruwanto, whose company is Rekacitra. They were amazing. I’d also like to thank the Pacific Place Jakarta, MasterCard, and Lamborghini for giving me the incredible opportunity to create this “Dreams Come True” exhibit.

A Stunning Glow Stone Entrance

May 30, 2012

Glow Stones Driveway Photoluminescent Stones

I found this photo on Pinterest. Isn’t it beautiful? The driveway is actually a mixture of gravel and glow stones (or glow rocks as they are sometimes called).

Do you know about glow stones? They’re non-toxic, photo-luminescent and waterproof. Expose them to light for a mere 10 minutes, and they’ll stay illuminated for more than 12 hours. (No electricity required.) Genius.

If you’ve been reading this blog for awhile and know my work, you know how strongly I feel about the entrance to my events — I always plan a few WOW moments. The entrance, after all, is your only chance to make an incredible first impression and set the tone for the rest of the evening. In other words, glow stones are an ideal material for me.

Dear Readers, have you ever used glow stones in your work? If so, send me a link! I’d love to see.

Dear Preston: I Had To Bring My Kids To Work

May 29, 2012

preston bailey, dear preston, wedding planner, angry bride and groom, angry clients, destination wedding, kids at weddings, wedding planner's kids at a wedding, vendors kids at weddings and events

Dear Preston,

I’m a wedding planner, and I live in an area that has become a hot spot for destination weddings. I’m also a single mom. When I have to work, my mom usually babysits my kids. However, recently, my mom came down with a bad flu. I had an afternoon wedding and couldn’t find anyone else to watch my kids. Since I had no other choice, I brought my kids with me to the wedding. Big mistake.

The bride and groom caught sight of my kids and got very upset. They told me they hadn’t traveled all this way for their intimate wedding only to have some strange kids there. Not to mention that they were paying me to work — not hang out with my children.

But, Preston, what kind of people don’t like kids? Besides, it’s not as if my kids were running all over the place; my clients only caught sight of them once briefly. I tried to explain this, but my clients were still very angry.

What should I have done?

Sincerely,
Single Mom

Dear Single Mom,

I must begin by congratulating you on your success! Most people have no idea how incredibly time consuming the wedding and event business is. And I’ve often wondered how vendors with children manage it all.

One of my frequent freelance vendors has an adorable little boy, and I always encourage her to bring him with her to work. My assistants and I love having a good excuse to take some fun play breaks!

As for your recent experience, you took a chance by bringing your children to work with you unexpectedly, and your clients had every right to voice their discontent.

It might have helped if you had called your clients as soon as you realized you were going to have to bring your kids. They would have appreciated the heads up and might have reacted better with that advance notice. You also would have had the chance to explain the circumstances.

The bottom line is that you are running a wedding planning business — not a day care center. Now, obviously, sometimes these situations arise, but when they do, you need to consider your clients: you should always do everything you can to minimize client inconvenience, and that starts with being honest and open.

Obviously, what’s done is done. Apologize profusely to your bride and groom. Then, move on.

Dear Readers, am I being too harsh with Single Mom? If so, what’s a better solution? Do you think this bride and groom reacted appropriately? Please share your thoughts.

What Are Your Summer Plans?

May 28, 2012

(Photo via The News-Herald)

Happy Memorial Day! This American holiday honors the brave men and women who have died while serving their country.

It’s also a day-off from work and school and, for me, marks the beginning of summer.

Of course, for those of us in the wedding industry, summer doesn’t exactly mean taking it easy — this is our busiest season! Nonetheless, I think it’s important not to work every day; even though you likely have way too much to do, make time to rest, relax and relish your friends and family.

I have a very hectic travel schedule this summer, and, unfortunately, my jet setting will be mostly for work. Still, I’m going to squeeze in a few vacation days here and there where I’ll get to meet up with my partner; I’m looking forward to our mini holidays in Bridgehampton as well as some sunny days in the South of France.

Dear Readers, what are your summer vacation plans? I’d love to hear what you’re looking forward to this year. Please share!

Friendly Friday: What Happens When A Wedding Planner Is Fired?

May 25, 2012

Today I’d like to feature a comment from a reader who responded to yesterday’s post: Dear Preston: Am I Being Unreasonable? Jennifer of J. Ward Design Studio shared a very compelling story, and I’d love to know what all of you think.

Here is what Jennifer had to say:

“I currently work with a wedding planner who brings her brides to my studio to meet me for a stationery consultation. I send all proofs to the brides but cc the planner; the planner and I then work out any kinks. We previously worked together on a bride’s stationery with this routine.

But about halfway through the planning process — after I’d already purchased the paper and began designing the invitations — the bride called ME and told me that she’s fired the planner! She said that she was just going to work with the vendors directly, because she had become so frustrated with the planner.

I can’t tell you how awkward I felt! The planner then called me and told me NOT to give the bride her deposit back, which was a non-issue because my services are nonrefundable. I tried to assure the bride that the planner would do a great job, but her mind was made up. I really didn’t know how to handle the situation. I completed the job for the bride, and fortunately, the planner and I still work together on many weddings.”

Dear Readers, what would you have done in Jennifer’s shoes? Would you have continued to work with this bride? It sounds like everything turned out fine; the bride was happy, and Jennifer and the planner have gone on to work well together on other weddings. But I’m curious how all of you would have handled this situation. Please share.
