Dear Preston,
I fell in love with this photo when I saw it on the back of a magazine. I sent it off to a magazine company and they where extremely helpful in informing me it was done by your team. I was hoping you could tell me more about it. It’s like looking into a fairy tale!

Dear Julia:
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment. This photo is from a wedding I designed in Carmel, CA. I like to call it “Re-Inventing Mother Nature”. Carmel and the surrounding areas are beautiful and we searched until we found the perfect location, a home with a large backyard. Unfortunately, time had stolen most of what was in the backyard, aside from a beautiful tree. There was no garden so we decided to create our own by taking the following steps:
- We connected with a wonderful grower in the area and were able to get lots of flowering potted plants.
- We built a gazebo with cascading flowers.
- We purchased lanterns to create the magical, fairy tale-like effect you reference in your kind letter.
- Finally, we placed a wooden runner down the aisle.
There is something very holy and magical about getting married with the sky as your altar. That said, I must encourage all clients and vendors to have a rain plan! In most cases, mother nature provides a gorgeous setting and in this case, we simply enhanced what was already perfect.
Question:
I am working mostly on outdoor weddings (as a florist or designer) this summer. I’d love to know which you prefer–indoor or outdoor ceremonies–and why?

George Bernard Shaw once said: “You see things and say, ‘Why?’ But I dream things that never were and say, ‘Why not?’” That quote embodies how Preston Bailey approaches every event.

Indoor for the flowers sake probably…it’s been a really not summer so that has been an issue.

Both have pro and cons. Depends what twist one want add to the design concept. I would love to do a outdoor wedding in August-Sep.as nature will add ambiguity along with nice weather. One can bring nature into indoor but might have to do more and depends on utilizing the space efficiently.

I saw this picture a million times but your description made me fall in love with it all over again. It also shed light on your hard work and the transformation.
By the way, I absolutely love the wooden aisle runner. How perfect, elegant, and fitting to the nature theme.
Can I just tell you my favorite lines were , “There is something very holy and magical about getting married with the sky as your altar… we simply enhanced what was already perfect.”
Have a great day!

I have attended and planned both. They each have pros and cons and have a different feel depending on venue and time of year. I personally enjoy an outdoor ceremony. I like the warmth of the sun, the fresh air in your face, the sound of waves crashing behind you, or the look and romance of a dim lighted ceremony under the stars. However, there should always be an alternate plan if the ceremony is planned outside in case of inclement weather.
